  • Stack's of New York conducts the 23rd and final auction of the John J. Ford Junior Collection. After 23 auctions of coins, tokens, currency, and numismatic books, the total price realized is $58 million, a record for a single collection. [338.66]

  • Representative Zack Space introduces H.R. 3956 in the House of Representatives, seeking the overturning of the ban on melting 1-cent and 5-cent coins, and transferring authority to deterine the metal content of coins from Congress to the Treasury. [333.32]

  • Representative Peter Roskam of Illinois and Representative Michael Castle of Delaware introduce H.R. 4036, the "Cents and Sensibility" Act, which would require the Treasury and the US Mint to change the metal composition of circulating coins up to the half dollar. [332.1]

  • Michael A. Newdow, attorney and founder of the First Amendmist Church of True Science, initiates lawsuits challenging government-sanctioned references to God, and the statute that requires "In God We Trust" to appear on all American coins and paper currency. (The case is decided March 11, 2010, ruling he does not have legal right to challenge the statute that made "In God We Trust" the National Motto.) [2.54]

  • Senator Sam Brownback of Kansas introduces S. 2417 to amend title 31 of the United States Code, to require the inscription "IN GOD WE TRUST" to appear on the obverse or reverse of Presidential dollar coins. [338.10]

  • The US Mint begins sales of 2007 Presidential $1 Coin Uncirculated sets. A four-coin set of either Philadelphia or Denver Mint sells for $8.95. An 8-coin set of all coins costs $15.95. [337.108]

  • In Congress, H.R. 4833 is proposed to authorize minting $5 gold and $1 silver commemorative coins in 2010 for the 400th anniversary of the founding of Sante Fe, New Mexico. [28.62]
